Handsome Dicks Play Elvis’ Birthday Bash
I did something the other day that I rarely do anymore. I logged into MySpace. And it appears I got lucky by logging in when I did because there was a bulletin posted by a UK band called the Handsome Dicks.
The bulletin read as follows:
1st HANDSOME DICKS SHOW THIS WEEK!
SAT AT THE 12 BAR DENMARK STREET LONDON…H.D’S ON FIRST SO BE EARLY…
ALSO WE’RE AFTER A ROCKIN’ GUITARIST SO IF YR INTERESTED SPEAK TO ONE OF THE DICKS AFTER THEY PLAY….
Little is known about the Handsome Dicks because, as far as I can tell, all they have is their MySpace page and they’re not giving a lot away. What I do know is that they are most definately fans of and influenced by the Dictators.
And if you are a regular Rockblog reader you will know I’m a huge fan of the Dictators. If you’re an irregular reader, click here and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
The Handsome Dicks take their name from Dictators singer “Handsome” Dick Manitoba. On their MySpace profile they claim they sound like: “The kinda punks who are into gettin’ drunk on Friday afternoon..”. A definite nod to the opening lines of the Dictators song “Cars and Girls” which starts: “I’m the kind of guy who’s into getting high on a Friday afternoon…”. Their “About” section ends with D.F.F.D! which stands for “Dictators Forever, Forever Dictators”, and their top row of friends are all Dictator related.
So it sounds like the Handsome Dicks should be right up my street.
I went to the 12 Bar Club’s website and found Saturday night listed as Bonnie & Clyde’s Renegade Rendezvous presents “Elvis’ Birthday Bash”, though the 12 Bar Club lists the band as the “Handsome Devils”.
I’ll try my best to make it down to London for this and the fact the Handsome Dicks are on early works for me since I couldn’t get home from London at 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning anyhow. I’ll stay and check out the other bands on the bill (listed on the poster below) until I have to make a dash for the last train. Should be a good night.

I’m seriously afraid to listen to the Dictators now. I listened to the Handsome Dicks and umm… wtf? Sounds like every other shitty English punk/grunge/rock band I’ve ever heard. The Gallows, The Strokes, The Hives… but less produced. I dunno man… there isn’t much redeeming value for me in it.
Drums are shit. Guitars are muddy and washed out. I know that’s the style, but come on. Gets old after awhile. Vocals are garbled shit. Come on mannnnn.
And I listened to them for at least 20 minutes and tried VERY hard to form an unbiased opinion haha

I didn’t say it was up everyone’s street, I said it was up MY street. But one look at my CD collection will show I’ve got a whole lot of streets, avenues, boulevards, and highways.
And what I’m really hoping for is a load of Dictators covers (and possibly a Stooges song or two considering this week’s events).
Oh, and I can’t even get in the movies for £6 (£5 with flyer).
